U.S. Army Uncovers Two Huge Afghan Arms Caches
Soldiers said they often had to tread gently while searching houses,
with accusations of heavy handedness causing anger and resentment among many Afghans.

US Forces in Afghanistan not winning the Hearts and Minds
Villagers have made no secret of that unhappiness. In the village of Marzak, several witnesses
say that 82d troops chased down a mentally ill man, pushed him to the ground, handcuffed him
and then took turns taking photos of themselves pointing a gun to his head.

Many of them sported full beards until a few weeks ago, when a news photo of a whiskery Green
Beret shook up the brass in Washington. A smooth-cheeked adult male is a strange sight for
rural Afghans, but the generals ordered all troops to shave immediately.

Bush's preemptive strike doctrine suits bin Laden just fine
Morgan suggests that it is likely that al Qaeda leadership knew they would be forced
to leave Afghanistan after launching the Sept 11 attacks. They understood there would
be a massive US retaliatory response and their retreat was planned well in advance.

I saw this in the flyer the other day.

Ukrainian radar deal with Iraq is reported
The radar system, nicknamed Kolchuga after the Russian word for chain-mail armor,
is a so-called passive radar system capable of seeing Stealth Aircraft.

Experts say it would be difficult to tell whether Iraq had the system as it consists of an
antenna attached to a truck, is mobile and detects radar signals but emits none of its own.
The system is said to be capable of tracking land targets at 370 miles (600 km), air targets
at 500 miles (800 km) and able to pinpoint stealth planes.

Some highlights of the speech Gore gave on Monday...

In the immediate aftermath of Sept. 11, more than a year ago, we had an enormous
reservoir of good will and sympathy and shared resolve all over the world, Mr. Gore
said. That has been squandered in a year's time and replaced with great anxiety
all around the world, not primarily about what the terrorist networks are going to
do, but about what we're going to do.

"It is impossible to succeed against terrorism unless we have secured the
continuing, sustained cooperation of many nations," Mr. Gore said. "And here's
one of my central points. Our ability to secure that kind of multilateral cooperation
in the war against terrorism can be severely damaged in the way we go about
undertaking unilateral action against Iraq."

"I am deeply concerned that the course of action we are presently embarking
on with respect to Iraq has the potential to seriously damage our ability to
win the war against terrorism and to weaken our ability to lead the world in
this new century," he said.

"I don't think we should allow anything to diminish our focus on dismantling
that network of terrorists that we know were responsible. The fact that we
don't know where they are should not cause us to focus instead on some
other enemy whose location may be easier to identify."

If other nations assert the same right, then the rule of law will quickly be
replaced by the reign of fear, and any nation that percieves itself threatened
would feel justified in starting wars.

Great nations persevere and then prevail, they do not jump from one unfinished
task to another, I do not believe that we should allow ourselves to be distracted
from this urgent task (the war on terror) simply because it is proving to be more
difficult and lengthy than first predicted.

The resulting chaos in the aftermath of a military victory with Iraq could easily
pose a far greater danger to the United States than does Saddam. If we end
the war in Iraq the way we ended the war in Afghanistan, we could very well
be in a position where we are worse off than we are today.

Mr Gore said he supported the aim of regime change in Iraq but said action
needed international support. "If you are going after Jesse James, you ought
to organise the posse first," he said

"There is an old saying in Tennessee. I know it's in Texas. They say,
'Fool me once, shame on you.' You can fool me, but you can't get fooled again."

BBC NEWS | Country profile: Iraq

Baghdad Battle May Topple Saddam
The prospect of a street fight in Baghdad makes American war planners shudder.
A military adage says that an offensive force can expect to lose 30 percent
of its troops taking a city.

Baghdad's outer reaches are defended by half of the Iraqi Republican Guard,
amounting to three tank divisions, each with between 10,000 and 15,000 troops,
U.S. officials say. The inner city is defended by an additional 15,000 troops
in a paramilitary unit called the Special Republican Guard.

Smash Saddam's power bases
The attack will most likely be in January or February. Analysts say it is highly unlikely
that Mr Bush would authorise military action in the midst of an election. Bush would
not risk offending Muslim allies by launching an attack on Iraq during Ramadan.

Just got a chance to goof around with the Blackhawk Down Demo. MK19!!!

bhd-mk19 (16k image)

MK19 40mm Machine Gun, MOD 3

I got around to installing the latest Nvidia Drivers I downloaded a week or so ago.
There was a noticable improvement in OFP after I installed it.
Turning on and off the TV-out on my GF2TI works better and seems to fit the TV better.
I'm also downloading the new Blackhawk Down pre-release demo.
My wife and I watched some of those Beavis and Butthead episodes this evening.
Later I played the new UT 2003 demo. The graphics are great, the game is solid and
plays nicely on my machine. I have always been a ID guy, but this looks pretty cool.

Did a the LAN party thing Sunday. Played the standard stuff Ghost Recon, OFP and DS.
I had alot of fun, I think Ghost Recon is becoming my favorite. It's very trouble free and
runs nicely on my machine. OFP is fun but it always seem to run a bit flakey.
I have been trying to play around with that SOB OS Linux again. The halfbreed machine
I built to run it is giving me the dreaded kernel panic. I couldn't even remove the old
partition because of it. Windows Fdisk can't deal with it, I ended up throwing it on my
boy k6 400 and using the Red Hat fdisk to kill the partitions. I will put an version of
windows on it. Speaking of that boy of mine, he seems to still be up, I am not sure why.

Considering the endless complexity of the universe, as well as whatever discipline you happen to be most interested in, you'll never be bored as long as you have a good book store, a net connection, and thousands of dollars worth of expensive equipment. Assuming you're a technical geek, you'll be able to afford it, too. If you're not a technical geek, you're geek enough to mate with a technical geek and thereby get the needed dough. Dating tip: Don't date a geek of the same persuasion as you. You'll constantly try to out-geek the other.

Changes to our freedoms thanks to Bush, the Congree and the USA Patriot Act.

FREEDOM OF ASSOCIATION:
Government may monitor religious and political institutions
without suspecting criminal activity to assist terror investigation.

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION:
Government has closed once-public immigration hearings, has secretly detained
hundreds of people without charges, and has encouraged bureaucrats to resist
public records requests.

FREEDOM OF SPEECH:
Government may prosecute librarians or keepers of any other records if they tell
anyone that the government subpoenaed information related to a terror investigation.

RIGHT TO LEGAL REPRESENTATION:
Government may monitor federal prison jailhouse conversations between
attorneys and clients, and deny lawyers to Americans accused of crimes.

FREEDOM FROM UNREASONABLE SEARCHES:
Government may search and seize Americans' papers and effects
without probable cause to assist terror investigation.

RIGHT TO A SPEEDY AND PUBLIC TRIAL:
Government may jail Americans indefinitely without a trial.

RIGHT TO LIBERTY:
Americans may be jailed without being charged or being able to confront witnesses against them.

I have been doing alot of Iraq coverage lately. I do think this could be the beginning
of something really bad. I hope it doesn't, but I think it will get out of hand and
alot craziness will occur. There are so many things that may change and upset
the balance there right now it's mindboggling.

Finally broke down last night and started reading books again.
I started off with something really light.

Taliban Foreign Minister Muttawakil and his warnings of September 11 that were ignored

Muttawakil (13k image)The emissary went first to the Americans, travelling across
the border to meet the consul general, David Katz, in the
Pakistani border town of Peshawar, in the third week of
July 2001. They met in a safehouse belonging to an old
mujahedin leader who has confirmed to The Independent
that the meeting took place. Another US official was
also present possibly from the intelligence services.

He took the warning to the Kabul offices of UNSMA, the
political wing of the UN. These officials heard him out,
but again did not report the secret Taliban warning to UN.

Report: U.S. ignored warning sent by Taliban FM prior to 9/11
Warning of 9/11 attack 'ignored'

Bush's Foreign Policy Approval Drops

Lack of strong evidence clashes with White House warnings
Senior U.S. officials with access to top-secret intelligence on Iraq say they have detected no
alarming increase in the threat that Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein poses to U.S. security and
Middle East stability.

War could be costly mistake
The price of oil, now hovering near $30 a barrel, could go above $50 in the event of fighting.
The hunt for Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan is estimated to be costing about $30 million a day.
Hussein may fire missiles at Saudi and Kuwaiti oil fields, that could endanger global energy supplies.
The tab for rebuilding Iraq once the much-anticipated fighting ends could top $50 billion.
Thousands of U.S. soldiers would have to remain in Iraq as a peacekeepers for as long as 10 years.

In Sweden Christian Democratic is calling for porn to be on television all day every Saturday.
tk5-small (10k image)
Teres Kirpikli, a municipal councillor in the southern town of Skoevde, said
pornography was the best way to get couples to have more sex and procreate.
"I want erotica and porn on television every Saturday, all day. Then people would
feel like having more sex. I think most people like porn, even though they don't
want to admit it," she said in a statement. "There is nothing wrong with a man
and his wife or partner watching porn together," she added. Kirpikli, a married
mother of three, is running for a seat in parliament in Sweden's legislative
elections, to be held on September 15.

Man with 16 guns arrested in D.C.
The U.S. Secret Service arrested a man armed with 10 rifles and six handguns .
33-year-old Jeffrey Cloutier, of Newport, New Hampshire.
"He said President Bush was doing a poor job, and he was going to take care of him and take over"
Cloutier's wife was also taken into custody.

Update
"He told me he was going to see the president because he had had a brain operation and had
a chip implanted in his brain," says Pauloski. "He didn't like the way the operation went, and
was going to talk to the president about it. He said he was the president's boss, and with the
chip implant, he had mental telepathy and could tell what everyone was thinking, which was
really out of the ordinary."

The man -- about 5'8" tall, 30 to 35 years old, wearing bedroom slippers, dirty jeans and T-shirt

At that point, Pauloski wondered about his passenger and asked where he was headed.
Washington, D.C. was the answer. He told Pauloski he had to meet the president Wednesday.

"What's that all about?" Pauloski asked. "He said, 'Well I had this operation, this brain operation.
It didn't come out right, and the government is kind of responsible for it ... They put a chip in my
head and now I can read everybody's mind.'"
