Samhain - Halloween
The ancient feast of Samhain (pronounced Sah-win), celebrated on November 1,
was the most important feast on the Celtic calendar. It marked the end of one
year and the start of another.

Samhain is neither a Celtic god of the dead, or the major Sun god.

The Church sought to assist conversion by substituting Christian ‘versions’ of
sacred days and deities for ancient Celtic ones – Samhain became All Hallow’s
Eve and All Saint’s Day.

One can find in the ‘Christian’ Halloween remnants of Celtic Samhain, including
bonfires, imagery of gourds and other harvest icons, and conceptions of the
dead visiting the world of the living.
